The Migrant Tax

Posted on March 19, 2009

The poisonous homuncula Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has announced New Labour’s latest gimmick to divert attention from the present desperate crisis of capitalism and the real causes of inequality in society, by announcing the introduction of a £50 tax on workers and students entering Britain from outside the EU (they would tax EU citizens too if it were legal), on top of the already huge fees charged for processing residency and citizenship applications, supposedly to ‘ease the impact of immigrants on public services’. This is despite the fact that if migrant workers were excluded, as scum like MigrationWatch would like, Britain’s health and social care systems would collapse for one — and this situation will only get worse in a country with a declining birthrate and an aging population.

A further example of the “fair”, “just”, “reasonable” and “non-racist” controls introduced by this government, the new levy is a defacto pass system.

Do you sound a bit ‘foreign’? Is your skin the ‘wrong’ colour? Show me your tax receipt please.

‘Foreign’ and ‘domestic’ are arbitrary and meaningless categories in any case, as if there is some magic difference between a worker who migrates to, for example, Bristol from Fife, and one who migrates from Bosnia.

Immigration controls always have their latest demons, real or imagined. Today it is “economic migrants” - whose labour is needed but whose presence is unwanted.
