Woolas the Anti-racist

Immigration Minister Phil Woolas claims it was his commitment to anti-racism which led him to join the Labour Party when he was in his teens. How strange it is then, that his commitment to anti-racism does not extend to abjuring racist immigration laws. In fact he recently gave an interview in which he stated that the population of the UK should be capped at 70 million, which would mean junking the present, unacceptable, unfair and discriminatory ‘points’ system. His shameless pandering to the right and the politics of fear and hatred, was criticised for ’starting an auction of anti-foreigner rhetoric’, as New Labour and the Tories compete with each other to see which party can present itself as harder on migrants and give the most ‘anti-foreigner soundbites’.
It has been reported that Woolas later ‘backtracked’ on his remarks about an immigration cap, although he only went as far as to saying that EU citizens will be able to come and go freely.
On BBC One’s Politics Show, he said: “I think, frankly, there’s a lot of nonsense talked about the cap…
“The European Union population can come and go just as we from Britain go and live in Spain, perhaps, or France - so, too, can others come to our country.
“So it’s very difficult to see, even if we are in favour of a cap, what it should be.”
But he said: “I’m not saying there could be no limit whatsoever.”
In other words, Fortress Europe, ringed by razor wire and laagers — Whites only thank you.
Meanwhile, winning the prize for the most anti-foreigner soundbite, the extremely slimy Tory Shadow Home Secretary, Dominic Grieve, lost no time in attacking Woolas/New Labour for the ’softness’ of their disgusting immigration policy.
The minister has admitted that behind his words there is no action.
We will do more than give warm interviews. We will introduce an annual limit on non-EU immigration, transitional controls on immigration from new member states, and establish a dedicated UK border police force.
